household cleansers for silver oxidation?

Sarah R asked:

I have a silver ring that has tarnished, but no “silver jewelry cleanser”….

Are there any household cleaning products that would reverse the oxidation process and make it shiny again?

Toothpaste is usually pretty safe and quite effective.

Sodium carbonate (not sodium bicarbonate) dissolved in hot water inside an aluminium pan. Place the ring in the pan and let it sit for several minutes. Arm and Hammer super washing soda is pure sodium carbonate and works best. Most powdered dishwasher detergent contains some and will work. I take an aluminium cake pan 2/3 filled with water and put it on the stove. When the water is about to boil I dissolve about a handful of the powder in it. You will need to stir it. Then put the silver in to soak till the water is cool. Rinse. Dry. The silver must be in contact with the aluminium and completely covered in the water.
