Cleaning Silver with Hydrogen Peroxide?

Ceridwyn asked:

Ok now by trial and error I know this was a dumb idea but I tried to clean my favorite silver pendant with hydgrogen peroxide because it worked on my other jewelry and now the half of the pendant that touched the liquid in the bottlecap is darkened. Is there a way to fix this?

Get some real silver cleaner and see if it works. Some times home remedies aren’t the best idea.

When silver tarnishes, it oxidizes (combines with oxygen to form silver oxide).
Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer. It gives off pure concentrated oxygen, and thus actually *causes* metals to rust and tarnish (oopsie).
So all you need to do is get a store-bought silver cleaning dip, as long as the oxidation isn’t too deep and hasn’t marred the metal. If the surface still looks dull after dipping, you’ll need to physically rub it with a silver polish to buff it out.
