Did I just ruin my silver and diamond ring?

Becca asked:

I put it in some liquid all-purpose jewelry cleaner, and forgot about it for an hour, and when I pulled it out, the band was black. I’ve been scrubbing it for a few minutes, and it’s lightened up, but it’s not shiny anymore. Did I ruin it?
Oh, yeah it was expensive. My grandmother gave it to me, and it was a gift to her from my grandfather. It’s a full carat canary diamond.

Well, there are a few things you can do, but the first thing I would do (given it sounds like an expensive ring) is go to a professional jewlers and see what they say about it. Ultrasonic jewelery cleaners might do the trick. Also, for the future, there are cloths made that are specifically for polishing silver (you can probably ask about it at the jewler’s) - and, being a cloth, this kind of thing can’t happen again. Good luck!

I see “starlet” keeps up with her yahoo answers..
it is not ruined. you have (probably) taken all of the clear coat off of it. clean it with a silver polishing cloth, and contact a jewler.
ask them if they re-surface, or re-coat silver. the clear coat helps to keep it from tarnishing, and sometimes needs to be re-done/coated. since you have helped the process….check with a jewler. it will be o.k. (make sure you KNOW the jewler because of the sentimental value, and the value of the stone….)
